Social in the Scientific Environment: Invited Talk by Dr. Sebastian Joseph

Dr. Sebastian Joseph delivered an expert lecture during the seminar, ‘Perspectives on Environment’, organised by the Department of Physics, UC College, in association with UBCHEA in the college on August 11, 2016. In the lecture entitled, ‘Social ‘in the ‘Scientific’ Environment, he posited the argument that with the development of science and resultant advancements in technology humans’ disenchantment with nature. This led to human hegemony over nature which varied from region to region and system to system. Utilitarian mindset generated by scientific and technological development created a mindset totally alienated from nature and natural resources were seen as mere commodities. He cited the example of plant transfer coordinated by the British in the later half of the nineteenth century with the backup of botanical sciences and a network of botanical gardens that had eventually led to the consolidation of colonial interests. C. R Neelakandan, Environmental activist and Dr. T.K Sajeev of Kerala Forest research Institute were the speakers for other sessions. The seminar was attended by students and faculty members from various departments of the college. . The seminar was conceived and coordinated by Dr. Reshmi R, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics.
