Malhar: History Day Celebrations, 2015

Malhar2015, the history day for the academic year 2014-15 was celebrated in the VMA

Hall on April11, 2015. The event was inaugurated by eminent historian, Prof.K.V

Kunhikrishnan, Visiting Professor at School of Social Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi

University, Kottayam.  Delivering the inaugural address, Prof. Kunhikrishnan stressed

the need of understanding the deeper layers of historical events through continuously

asking questions to the problem investigated by the researcher. He pointed to the

importance of the why factor in historical research, and said that only when the why of

historical events are understood there happens perspectival breaks in historical

knowledge.  In his presidential address, Dr. Sebastian Joseph, Staff Advisor to the

History Association, spoke on the context of a decline in the quality of historical

research and teaching and also pointed to the marginalisation of the discipline at higher

levels in the contemporary society.  Mr. Rajasekharan Nair, (cook in the college

canteen) affectionately called Rajan Chettan by the Ucean community was honoured

during the occasion. He was adorned with a Ponnada by Prof. Kunhikrishnan and also

presented a gift as a mark of respect and love of the students and teachers of the

department.  Ms. Juby John, Assistant Professor, Ms. Tresa Divya, Assistant Professor,

Akhil Alias, Association Secretary, Vani Vijayan, Assistant Secretary, Lijo Sebastian,

Sudhi C.J and Amrutha Ravi felicitated during the occasion. Sudhi C.J (II MA) and

Amrutha Ravi (III BA) were selected the best out going students of the department and

Lijo Sebastian, (former PG student) UGC- JRF winner was honoured. Prizes were

distributed to students who excelled in academics, sports and other competitions. The

meeting was followed by a variety of entertainment programmes by the students

including classical dance, solos and a mimicry performance by Pradeep C.G, canteen

contractor.
