Keralolpatti: Re-examination of a Contested Chronicle from Kerala
Keralolpatti has by far remained as a major historical ‘source’ for the construction of Kerala history. It is long known to scholars of history as a Brahmin chronicle created by Brahmins with their stories of origin, spread and establishment in the regions to which they migrated. The talk intends to take up a full-length analysis of the tradition of writing Keralolpatti chronicles and to understand the historical time it represents or claims to represent. The study will view Keralolpatti not as a non-static text of Brahmin influence but a changing textual form that imbibed the historical changes and needs of Kerala society. The major focal point of study was in its argument that Keralolpatti was not just a Brahmin traditional chronicle that carried legends and tales for Brahmin legitimacy but also a textual form for legitimizing the historical needs of and developments in the regional politics leading to the post-Cera state formation.
