Discovery of Paleolithic tools from Wayanad

The students of Archaeology & Museology discovered a stone tool from the river bed in Kuruva Island a popular picnic spot in Wayanad district, Kerala on 6th February 2015. The discovery was made by Pranav P.H of third B.A History. The tool was examined in detail by  Dr. Jenee Peter, Assistant Professor, Department of History,U.C College and Ms. Madhavi.K Assistant professor in Archaeology,Department of History, Marthoma College Perumbavoor. It is a rounded tool probably a hand axe of paleolithic period. The flake scars and bulb of percussion are clearly visible. Wayanad is on the archaeological map of Kerala for the discovery of Edakkal Engravings and Neolithic Celts. This is perhaps the first time Paleolithic tools have been found here taking the regions antiquity further. The earliest paleolithic tool in Kerala was discovered from a river bed in Palakkad in 1970s.

Tools might have been carried from uphill by the river. Further explorations are required to understand this period further. The tool is displayed in the U.C College Archaeological museum
