Facilities
The Department of History is equipped with various resources and facilities. As and when funds are available, these resources and facilities are being improved upon, and made available to students, research scholars and other interested researchers. Some of the prominent facilities include:
Department Library & Reading Room
The department maintains a library and reading room. The library has a commendable collection of books, ranging from certain published archival materials to books that are unavailable in the nearby libraries and colleges. The collection is being regularly updated and improved upon as funds and resources become available. The department also has a reading room, adjacent to the department staff room. The reading room, besides being a space for students and research scholars to pursue their academic work, is also the venue for departmental seminars, workshops, film screenings, etc.
Archaeological Museum
The Department of History at UC College is one of the few history departments that has an archaeological museum of its own. It has a rare collection of artefacts, collected by students and teachers who have been involved in the archaeological excavations in the near by areas.The museum has been selected as one of the participatory institutions in the National Mission for Monuments and Antiquities, a Government of India initiative run by the Archaeological Survey of India. This project covers listing the antiquities in the museum, in reserve collections and also heritage mapping of the campus. It is open for visitors during the college hours.
History Association
The History Association of Union Christian College, Aluva was founded in 1929 with Dr. T. I. Poonnen as the President and Shri. N. V. Bhaskaran as the Secretary. At the time, it was known as the ‘Historical Association’. Today, the association includes all students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, enrolled in the History Department of Union Christian College, Aluva. The association strives to provide an open space for students to express themselves both, academically and culturally.
Conservation Laboratory
The department has facilities to conserve and restore museum objects, and offers consultancy in designing small museums. Field lab kit is available for conducting regular archaeological field studies and the artefacts collected are consolidated in the lab before displaying in the museum.
