Union Christian College was founded in 1921. History, together with Economics and Philosophy, was part of the intermediate programme offered by the College since inception. From 1965, the Department of History started offering BA and MA degrees in History. and in1980 it awarded its first PhD. The Archaeology Museum was established in 1975. Presently, the department has seven faculty members and about 120 students. Faculty has specialisations in Archaeology, Gender, Childhood, Pre-modern Cultural History, Modern Kerala History, Modern Indian History, Historiography and Theory.
